Many of these barriers are invisible in everyday life; in addition to stressing the wheelchair user, they can disrupt their routine. We prepared a list of situations that every person in a wheelchair has been through; in addition, we look for solutions to some problems that are not recurring.

Lack Of Accessibility On Streets And Parking Lots

One of the most recurrent problems for a wheelchair user is moving around in public spaces without used wheelchair vans in new york. Uneven, bumpy, or/and narrow sidewalks; the lack of on-ramps or poorly made on-ramps. However, if the wheelchair user uses a car, they also experience difficulties. Even with the vacancies for PCDs, the accessibility problem is not always solved.

The reservation of unique parking spaces for people with disabilities is ensured by federal law. The rule determines that 5% of the total vacancies are for the elderly and 2% for people with disabilities. First, the parking space needs to be close to the door. In addition, there needs to be more space for the wheelchair user to move around with the chair or even remove it from the car.

The problems not only involve the structure of the parking lot but its occupants. Disrespect for the position of a wheelchair user is unfortunately common. Without a space for wheelchair users, it may be impossible for the PCD to access buildings, stores, and service providers.

All of this makes life difficult for wheelchair users, and, unfortunately, there is no practical solution to these problems, in addition to requiring improvements by the government.

A tip to avoid these inconveniences is researching the place you plan to go to on Google Maps, using the images to check the accessibility of the streets, and thus reduce these inconveniences. You can also call the establishment you are planning to go to to find out if there are adapted spaces for wheelchair users in the parking lot, for example.

    Be The Center Of Attention.

Everyone in a wheelchair must have already felt the sensation of being the center of attention, right? It is easy to find wheelchair users reporting that they are followed by curious and strange looks when they leave the house.

Unfortunately, lack of information is a big problem in our society; most people have never lived or had contact with a wheelchair user. However, this does not justify their invasive behavior.

That’s why awareness is so essential; the only difference between a person using a wheelchair and a person who doesn’t is that the way they move around is different, and that doesn’t make the wheelchair user special or different from the rest of society.
